What is a Junk Journal?

You may have never heard of a junk journal, but I fell in love with the idea. The name is kind of misleading because the journal is not full of junk at all. However, the options for creating a junk journal and the contents contained within it is completely up to you. Some people actually use junk mail in their journals. I am sharing my idea for a junk journal with you in hopes to inspire you.

What Do You Need For a Junk Journal

I love mixed media. The different textures, colors, and details speak to me. My own junk journal is full of mixed media. It is full of blessings and mementos. To make one similar to mine you need:

  • A hard cover book (I purchased mine from Dollar Tree.)

  • Scrapbook paper

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Mod Podge

  • Embellishments (metal, wood, and anything else you can think of) I personally love Tim Holtz products. His Paper Dolls pack is one of my favorites. You can check those out in my store by clicking here.

  • Fillers (examples would be photos, concert tickets, recipes, and anything else you want to add)

  • An imagination

HOW I PUT MY JOURNAL TOGETHER

  1. I removed the paper cover on the book. The hard cover I started with was white.

  2. Because your journal is going to expand as you add to it, you need to tear out pages of your book to give it room to grow.

  3. Cut the scrapbook paper to the size of the pages of your book. Mine was 6 inches X 9 inches.

  4. In order to make the pages a bit more sturdy, I glued two pages together.

  5. Glue the scrapbook pages you cut onto the pages of your book. (I covered the front and back covers as well.)

  6. Add embellishments and fillers to your journal.

Here are a couple pages from mine.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT A JUNK JOURNAL

  1. You can make it your own. Your own style and personality.

  2. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

  3. Each page tells its own story.
